Oscar De La Hoya reckons Victor Ortiz could have beaten Floyd Mayweather – Boxing news
The Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya has said that Victor Ortiz could have beaten Floyd Mayweather in the fight that ended in a controversial fourth round knockout.
De La Hoya, who defeated 17 world champions and won 6 world titles in six different weight classes, shared his thoughts with his fans on his official Twitter page.
He believes Ortiz would have broken Mayweather’s unbeaten record if the fight had gone the distance.
The Vicious, Ortiz, head-butted Mayweather in the earlier stages of the fourth round due to which he was pulled away by the referee, Joe Cortez, and he was docked a point. When the fight was reset, Ortiz went on to hug Mayweather as an apology but the undefeated
American legend responded him with two punches which knocked out Ortiz.
Though Mayweather was dominating Ortiz on all three ringside judges’ scorecards, De La Hoya thinks the Garden City warrior was just warming up. The 38-year-old Mexican-American pugilist stated Ortiz is a strong puncher and he could have overpowered Mayweather.
Oscar Tweeted, “He was just warming up putting may weather on the ropes. Then the cheap shot came along and the ref was lost looking at someone ringside. You cannot tell who's going to win just by seeing 4 rounds especially when u have a young strong puncher
like victor in front of you.”
“I'm just still fired up because of victor being young and strong and was in amazing shape and was hungry to win,” he added.
De La Hoya, who has made more money than any other boxer in the history of the sport, took on the five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, Mayweather, in a bout back in May 2007 at the MGM Grand Arena
in Las Vegas, Nevada.
De La Hoya dominated Mayweather in the earlier rounds before Mayweather bounced back and took control. Therefore, De La Hoya remarked one can never predict a winner so early.
Oscar said, “Wasn’t I dominating may weather? Then he came around so my point is you just never know. I'm just saying a great fight was cut short because of bad sportsmanship.”
