Oscar Ekstrom and Mats Westergren win swimming events: Swedish Junior SC Swimming Championships
Oscar Ekstrom and Mats Westergren displayed their smothering efforts and captured gold medals of Men’s 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle respectively at the 2012 Swedish Junior Short Course (SC) Swimming Championships in Valby, Sweden on Sunday, January
29.
The session included finals of 100m butterfly, 400m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly in Men and Women’s category.
The first event of the session was 100m butterfly, where Ekstrom proved his eligibility for gold medal by outperforming his competitors in the four-lap butterfly discipline. He remained dominant over his challengers throughout the event and ended his swim
in a time of 53.73 seconds for gold medal.
He was trailed by Alexander Linge, who remained just a stroke behind him on the finishing end and reached the wall with an effort of 54.01 seconds for silver medal. The third position of the race was claimed by Jesper Jonsson, who remained just 0.35 seconds
slower from the silver medallist and ended his swim in a time of 54.36 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 400m freestyle, where Westergren emerged on the podium for top position by clocking a time of 3 minutes and 52.68 seconds. He faced strong competition from Kristian Kron throughout the distant freestyle event but managed to edge out him
on the finishing blockade by a margin of 0.02 seconds.
Kron was only 0.02 seconds away from the champion and cemented his place on the victory stand for second position by producing an effort of 3 minutes and 52.70 seconds. Adam Paulsson remained 0.10 seconds behind his former finisher and completed his race
in a third fastest time of 3 minutes and 52.80 seconds.
Subsequently, the arena experienced tremendous effort of Elin Martensson in the Women’s 200m breaststroke. Martensson improved the championship record of the race and concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 24.70 seconds for gold medal.
She was trailed by Jessica Eriksson, who stayed nearly three seconds behind her and surfaced on the wall by submitting an effort of 2 minutes and 27.87 seconds for silver medal. Vendela Norrman was almost five seconds away from the silver medallist as she
reported a time of 2 minutes and 32.34 seconds for bronze medal.
Finally, Miranda Bannsgard secured top spot of the Women’s 200m butterfly by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 14.35 seconds. She was chased by Elin Podeus, who earned second position of the event by hitting the wall with a 2 minutes and 14.81 seconds effort.
The silver medallist remained 0.07 seconds faster from her subsequent competitor, Nadja Salomonsson, who appeared on the podium for third position with timing of 2 minutes and 14.88 seconds.
Furthermore, the position holders received a huge round of applause from the audience at medal ceremony of the championship.
