Oscar Floren leads The Irish Open on day one – Golf news
Oscar Floren put on a world-class display at The Irish Open as he carded a stunning six-under par rounds of 66 to take a one stroke lead over a group of six players, on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
The Irish Open is being staged at the Carton House Golf Club, where a number of top-notch players are contending against each other, vying for a share of €2,000,000 prize fund.
Floren, who has not been able to record a single top-10 finish so far this season, started his campaign on a high note, as he birdied the first hole on day one. He then followed it by adding another two shots on the fourth and the sixth hole and reached
the turn in three under.
The back nine of the course witnessed him draining an amazing eagle putt on the 13th hole, before finishing his round with another birdie on the 18th.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, the 29-year-old Swede revealed that he brought some changes in his game, during the past few weeks. He believes that the changes have finally started paying him off.
“I played great today,” he said. “It was nice to get off good start today. I hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens, and eventually a few putts are going to drop. Mentally I’ve changed a bit and put in the work, doing the smart things every day. After March/April
I changed things and it’s been paying off. I’ve been in form the last few weeks, I finished well in Germany but I played well in St Omer and Austria the first two rounds as well.”
Rory McIlroy, who was expecting to return to his form after performing poorly in the past few weeks, once again failed to show his class and faltered for a two-over par score, courtesy of four bogeys against just two birdies.
Right from the beginning of the 2013 golf season, McIlroy has been struggling with his form and was expected to make a comeback in Ireland, his home soil. However, he still has not been able to cheer his fans and it is yet to see if he manages to do that
in the remaining three rounds.
