Oscar Fraustro wins the Dominican Republic Open
Three straight birdies between the 15th hole and the 17th hole, in the final round led the Mexican Oscar Fraustro to a resounding victory in the Dominican Republic Open, on Sunday, November 11, 2012.
The tournament was being played at the Cana Bay Golf Club, featuring some of the prominent names on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica.
Fraustro was unable to complete his third round campaign, as the inclement weather forced the game to be suspended in the evening.
As a result, he returned to the field on Sunday morning and surged to the top of the leaderboard after posting a sparkling 67 on his scorecard.
Thereafter, he failed to keep the momentum going into the final round and got off a shaky start, giving his rivals a chance to chase him down on the leaderboard.
He carded a birdie on the second hole and followed that with a bogey on the very next hole. He then conceded a double bogey on the fifth hole.
Afterwards, he tried to gain some momentum by posting a birdie on the seventh hole. However, another bogey on the eighth hole moved him to a two-over par score before the turn.
It was a disastrous start for Fraustro, who was enjoying such a great form right from the beginning of the tournament.
Therefore, he refocused his mind and picked up pace on the back nine of the course and drained three birdie putts, without conceding a single bogey for a one-under par 71.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled four strokes better than Marcelo Rozo, who carded a six-under par tournament score to take the sole second position.
It was Fraustro’s maiden victory on the inaugural season of the PGA Tour Latinoamérica, having finished second twice this year.
"The day was not easy, as there was wind changing," he said. "No one took advantage of opportunities, and I had some small mistakes when I was seven or eight holes I said 'this is my chance to win, you better take advantage of that'. Then I put the batteries
and found a way to make some birdies to win".
