Oscar Freire eyeing the UCI World Championships 2012
Oscar Freire of Team Katusha is targeting the UCI Road World Championships as the next big thing of the season.
The cyclist is currently enjoying a terrific season and has filled his bag with numerous victories in the young after the first quarter.
Oscar bagged stage wins at the Tour Down Under and the Vuelta a Andalucia and finished second at the E3 Harelbeke and the Brabantse Pijl in the current season.
He finished 7th at the Milan-San Remo and occupied the 4th overall spot during his most recent appearance at the Amstel Gold Race.
Enrico Gasparotto of Team Astana claimed his first victory of the season at the Dutch race by finishing the race in a quickest time of 6 hours, 32 minutes and 35 seconds.
Jelle Vanendert of Team Lotto claimed the second spot with Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale at the third position.
Oscar told Het Nieuwsblad, "What a h**l of a climb this Cauberg is. The last 200 meters I literally died on the bike".
"The lesson of this Amstel is that I can become a World Champion here for a fourth time. If I do, then I'll continue to race one more year".
Oscar started his 2012 campaign with Team Vitalicio Seguros in 1998 and stayed with the team for a period of two years.
He also represented Team Mapei-Quick Step (2000-02), Team Rabobank (2003-11) and finally accepted an offer from Team Katusha for the current season.
“I feel good and healthy. What's more, at Katusha I get the confidence I need to prepare for races at my own rhythm".
The three-time World Champion is now eyeing the 2012 version of UCI World Championships and he is determined to fill his bag one more victory at the coming event.
Oscar claimed three gold and one bronze medal during the UCI World Championships and won one silver during the Under 23 World Championships.
Freire currently holds the 6th overall spot at the UCI Elite Men’s rankings with a total number of 167 points to his credit.
Tom Boonen is leading the category with Peter Sagan, Samuel Sanchez, Simon Gerrans and Vincenzo Nibali occupying the next four spots.
