Oscar Freire not happy with his form at the Tour de France 2012
Oscar Freire of Team Katusha was looking good during the stage 2 of the Tour de France but failed to overcome his major competitors.
The cyclist followed Mark Cavendish throughout the race but had to surrender before the race favourites.
Mark Cavendish finished the race in the first place and registered his 21st Tour de France victory after a photo-finish.
Andre Greipel of Team Lotto Belisol finished second with Matthew Harley Goss, Tom Veelers of Team Orica GreenEdge and Alessandro Petacchi of Team Lampre-ISD finishing at the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Freire finished the race at the 16th position and was totally disappointed with his performance.
“I was in the sprint in the beginning, but in the last moment I didn't have power enough to sprint. Today I tried, but I need to be better,” he noted.
"Today was not the best sprint for me but maybe tomorrow. It's too early now”.
While commenting on his current form, he cited, “If I have better form, things will be much easier".
“With age, some sprinters tend to avoid the risks more often. Tom Boonen is an example of this. "I think he's younger than me. If he's 36, for sure he'll be more scared".
The 36-year-old is enjoying a good season and is amongst the top cyclists selected by the Russian team to ride the Tour.
He has already filled his bag with numerous good performances in the first half of the season including stage victories at the Santos Tour Down Under and the Vuelta a Andalucia.
Friere finished second during the E3 Harelbeke, the Brabantse Pijl, fourth during the Amstel Gold Race and seventh at the Milan-San Remo 2012.
Denis Menchov is the top Team Katusha cyclist with his sixth overall position after the stage 2 classifications.
Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan is leading the category with a strong lead of 7 seconds over Team Sky cyclist Bradley Wiggins.
Sylvain Chavanel of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Tejay Van Garderen of Team BMC and Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky are holding the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
