Oscar Gonzalez to defend WBC super bantamweight title against Giovanni Caro – Boxing News
Oscar Gonzalez, the current WBC United States (USNBC) super bantamweight champion, will defend his title for the first time against Giovanni Caro, the former WBC International super bantamweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on May 19,
2012.
The duo will headline the special edition which is being promoted by Erik Morales of Box Latino. The ring for the event will be set up at Tepic’s Monumental bull ring situated at Nayarit, Mexico.
The Saturday night show will be co-headlined by the NABF light flyweight championship bout between Pedro Guevara and Raul Castaneda and will be televised live on Mexico’s state television Televisa.
Oscar recently shared his thoughts about the upcoming venture in a media interaction and seemed to be extremely excited since the bout will take place at his home town. Gonzalez is a young Mexican proud who has been in a total 19 bouts and boasts 18 wins.
The orthodox pugilist has collected 12 of his wins by knocking the opponent out cold and has proudly held the WBC Youth World super bantamweight title as well. A bird’s eye view of the duo’s resume shows that Oscar’s opponent, Giovanni has a clear upper
hand since he has been in almost double the number of bouts fought by Gonzalez.
Giovanni, 28, has been in a total 37 bouts and emerged victorious in 23. He has nailed 18 of his opponent’s by sheer knockout and is considered as a top-notch knockout pounder.
In addition, Caro, also known as the ‘El Ruso’, proudly resides above Oscar in the world as well as Mexican rankings which shows that he is a tough opponent who cannot be ignored at all.
The odds are currently in favour of Oscar since Giovanni is coming from two consecutive high profile losses and one timid almost ignorable win. During the media interaction, Oscar, widely known as the ‘Finito’ or ‘Fantasma’, stated, “I am happy that the
fight will be in Tepic. I feel even more motivated and I know that the fans will be satisfied because it is a good fight. A fight that is going to open up doors for my career. I feel good, I feel prepared. I am ready for anything and ready to face him.”
While sharing some chunks of his game plan Gonzalez commented, “I have to look out for his power. They say that he can hit hard and I have to be careful of his right hand, which is the only thing I have to look out for.”
If Oscar grabs this win he will definitely not only move up in the rankings but will also capture media’s much needed attention which will afterwards portray him as a possible contender for apex divisional titles.
