Oscar Sevilla wins eighth stage and Felix Rafael Cardenas extends his overall lead in 2011 Vuelta a Colombia
Gobernacion De Antioquia-Indeportes Antioquia team’s Oscar Sevilla won the eighth stage of 2011 Vuelta a Colombia on Tuesday, June 21. Felix Rafael maintained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Duitama and ended in Socorro. The 34-year-old Spanish took a total of 4 hours, 21 minutes and 49 seconds to cover the distance of 199 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Oscar told the media, “Outbound tried. I stopped because it was too soon. It came with good legs, and had two second places here. Last year I lost with Duarte photo finish, but today I wanted to win."
Previously, Oscar took the overall spot in Vuelta Mexico Telmex and overall first place in Vuelta Antioquia in 2011. He also won second stage of Vuelta Asturias in 2009.
The stage winner, Felix, was the runner-up, while Juan Pablo Magallanez of Movistar finished third with a difference of 1 second.
A group of four riders made their first breakaway which included, Oscar Sevilla, Robinson Eduardo (Colombia Es Pasion), Jefferson Vargas (Redetrans-Supergiros-Indervalle-Emcali) and Walter Pedraza (Epm-Une). All of them gained an advantage of few seconds,
but the last three riders were caught by the peloton and Oscar took the first sprint.
However, in the seconds sprint Camilo Castiblanco gain a lead ahead of Julian Rodas and Carlos Ospina.
Walter Pedraza won the overall Mountain classification with 50 points ahead of Luis Fernando and Edgar Alonso.
Felix Rafael took overall standing with the timing of 31 hours, 56 minutes and 45 seconds. Jefrey Romero was in the second spot with 46 seconds behind Felix, while Walter Pedraza finished third with the difference of 58 seconds.
Sporting director of Boyacá Pride of America-Lot, Ismael Sarmiento said, "We spent ourselves at the end of the day. We are in the general struggle for other classifications, despite the mishaps of Edgar and Fernando, but here we are in the fight."
The next stage will start in Socorro and end in Bucaramanga. All the riders will cover the distance of 130 kilometres.
