Oscar de la Hoya: I think anyone who faces Floyd Mayweather will have little chance of winning – Boxing News
Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, was present at Miguel Cotto’s training facility in Orlando, Florida. While the Puerto Rican WBA (Super) Light Middleweight Champion, along with his trainer Pedro Diaz, sounded quite confident of him winning
against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Oscar de la Hoya had something else to say.
According to Oscar de la Hoya, “I think anyone who faces Floyd Mayweather will have little chance of winning. He has great defense, but he is not a perfect fighter. He has never faced Miguel Cotto. Miguel Cotto has the right game plan and the perfect corner.
It will really come down to who has the better game plan. Miguel Cotto is a strategist. He will wait and he will be patient. Will Mayweather be able to dictate the pace? Will Miguel’s patience be a problem for Mayweather? It will be very interesting.”
Appreciating Mayweather’s skills, Hoya said that Mayweather is a fighter who just wants to win and Cotto will need to have the same mentality to beat him. He said that it would be a problem for Mayweather if Cotto goes into the ring with the same amount
of energy and confidence. Furthermore, Hoya expressed that he believes if Mayweather can ever lose to any fighter then it would be on May 5 against Miguel Cotto.
While many think that Mayweather will retire unbeaten, Hoya thinks Mayweather is not invincible and he can be beaten easily. Oscar added that at some point in time Mayweather would have to go through his defeat as well, even though he is an awesome fighter
still it is difficult to walk out of this sport undefeated. Lastly, Oscar said that eventually that unbeaten record would have to go.
Miguel Cotto takes on Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cotto’s title will be on the line, which means for him the match is more than just about winning and losing. On the other hand, Floyd Mayweather’s WBC welterweight title will
not be on the line but his unbeaten streak is, which makes it a crucial fight for him as well.
