Oscar de la Hoya says Saul Alvarez might fight undercard for Cotto-Mayweather event – Boxing news
According to Oscar de la Hoya’s Twitter page, Saul Alvarez, the current WBC junior middleweight champion, might have a fight scheduled on May 5 as part of the event that will be headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto.
Oscar de la Hoya is from Golden Boy Promotions, the agency which is promoting the Mayweather vs. Cotto fight which be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Although nothing has been planned yet as to with whom Alvarez will fight, speculations suggest that it will be the 40-year-old Shane Mosley who is reluctant to fight Alvarez next.
Another buzz in town is that the former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan might be interested in the fight too and of course that’s a better gig for Golden Boy Promotions to jump on.
Oscar’s Twitter message was, “I have a few options for Canelo on May 5th. Who do you think.”
No confirmation from Amir Khan has been made on this issue since he is more interested in grabbing his rematch with Lamont Peterson.
However, there are no chances of Khan getting the rematch and he might now move up to 147. Previously, it was suggested to Khan that Mosley can be his worthy opponent which he agreed to but preferred to stay quite on his plans.
Since the May 5 event will be a highly anticipated one, Golden Boy Promotions will try their level best to keep their viewers entertained as much possible. Alvarez is confirmed to have his bout on the event but his opponent is still to be decided. The agency
is looking out for someone who can make the fight interesting and eye-catching and both the candidates have the potential to do that.
Khan is definitely a better fighter than Mosley and has more fan-following too. Mosley is considered a lagging horse now since he has not scored a victory in the last three years.
Since Khan has been quite controversial in the recent days, he is expected to bring more eyes to the arena than Mosley. From a business perspective, Khan is definitely a better choice for Golden Boy Promotions but let us see what they come up with as their
final option.
