  1. Only other South American cichlids that are the same size.

  2. Well, a good tank mate for an oscar is a plecostomus. oscars are very messy eaters and they tend to drop lots of food on the floor of the tank. A plecostomus is great because it will go around at night and clean up oscar's mess. An oscar will not normally get along with most fish. you have to be so careful of size. They will eat anything they can fit their mouth over (and some they cant!! Think a poor tetra held like a bone sideways in the oscars mouth!) The only options on tankmates you have are a LARGE pleco (a small one will be killed by a full grown oscar) or other African Cichlids that are similar in size, you have to watch out too, because if the fish are too aggresive, they can kill each other, especially if they dont have enough space in the tank. you could try a Pacu that is similar in size, I've seen them live peacefully enough. Just try to judge the fish's tempermant before you put anything in with him, or you could get some sad results.

  3. I would say possibly another Oscar or fish larger than the Oscar.  They are not schooling fish and grow so large you would need a pretty big tank to have other fish. My friend has an Oscar and it is extremely aggressive, it killed all the other fish in his tank including his algae eater.   My advice it to talk with your friend about the Oscar's temperment and experts at a fish store about adding another fish to its environment.
