Oshiomogho Atogwe to get reduced salary and role from Philadelphia Eagles – NFL News
When Oshiomogho Atogwe signed a one-year contract last Thursday with the Philadelphia Eagles, many analysts predicted him a major player in the upcoming season for team.
However, the contract’s details have revealed a different picture.
With his Washington Redskin’s contract, Atogwe was to earn a total of $4 million for the 2012 season. It was to be his second season in a five-year contract which he had signed with Redskins.
In 2011, Atogwe signed a five-year, $26 million deal. He was released in March due to some salary cap reasons.
After spending three months as a free agent, he signed a one-year contract with Eagles. The salary is certainly lower than what he was to get from Redskins.
However, the main cause of concern for Atogwe is that the reduced salary might reduce his role on the field.
The veteran will have $825,000 base salary which is the league’s minimum. Atogwe will get nothing initially for signing with the Eagles, but has a guaranteed $100,000 in the deal.
Atogwe has completed seven seasons in National Football League (NFL) after he was drafted by Saint Louis Rams in third round of 2005 Draft. At that time, he signed a three-year, $1.6 million contract with the Rams.
The veteran is capable of playing as a strong safety as well as free safety. He is a dynamic player and adds depth to the side.
Eagles do have a good number of skilled defence players. Designated starters like Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen can be well led by veteran Atogwe.
He can also be a good support to the young Jaiquawn Jarrett. Yet the information extracted from the contract reflects that Atogwe will get less playing time than expected.
The deal also reveals that Atogwe can also get as far as $100,000 in roster bonuses per game. Besides, he will also receive $225,000 for some undisclosed incentives.
He was to earn $500,000 in roster bonuses and a $100,000 workout bonus apart from a $3.4 million base salary from his Redskins deal.
Atogwe can earn a maximum of $1.15 million out of his contract with the Eagles. As compared to his scheduled payment from Redskins, it is a step down for him.
