Osi Umenyiora’s future: New York Giants keeping options open – NFL News
New York Giants’ general manager, Jerry Reese, has finally presented some details around the contract situation of defensive end, Osi Umenyiora, saying that the management wants to keep the player, but it is not ruling out other possibilities
While addressing a press conference on the final day of 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, the GM was asked about the possibility of Osi being traded to any other franchise.
Reese did not exactly comment on the trade speculations and said that he wanted to keep the player with the team. However, the general manager also added that the management was open to all the options, implying that a trade could be possible.
Reese said:
“All options are open with respect to that.  Our first choice with respect to Osi is that he will play for the Giants and retire as a Giant.  That is what we would like to happen.  Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now.  So we would still
like to make it work.  Hopefully it will work out.  But all of our options are always open.”
Osi, who is in last year of his current deal with Giants, has been demanding a long-term contract from the team since the end of the last season in which Giants won the Super Bowl.
The management has also repeatedly asserted its stance of keeping the player with the franchise, but a deal has not yet been reached.
Osi also missed the team’s voluntary workout programme to force the management to resolve the matter.
Earlier, it was also reported that Osi might be traded to any other team. The player himself claimed that the trade is possible as Giants already have a couple of good players serving at defensive end position and Osi does not want to play as their backup.
A couple of days ago, Giants gave a contract extension to linebacker, Mathias Kiwanuka. His new contract will run through 2015 season.
Osi is also seeking long-term job security from Giants and that’s why he is not ready to accept a short-term extension.
When asked about Kiwanuka’s contract extension, Osi said:
“It’s business. I don’t feel anything but happy for Kiwi honestly. My situation will take care of itself soon.”
