Ospreys Ben Lewis leaves hospital
Ospreys flanker Ben Lewis has been discharged from hospital after he injured his neck in the Magners League against Italian side Aironi at the weekend.
The 24-year-old left the pitch on a stretcher and in a neck brace after he was injured in the 23rd minute of the game. The Ospreys went on to win the match 38-6.
The Ospreys physio Chris Towers released a statement regarding Lewis. “I'm pleased to be able to say that it's good news regarding Ben's recovery. Ben has now been discharged from hospital, and fortunately, has no lasting damage."
The injury was expected to be far more serious in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The Ospreys do not expect the flanker to be out for too long.
“Under the circumstances, it is still a serious injury and we are still liaising with specialists regarding his recovery, but the prognosis is very good," added Towers.
"Once the initial stage has settled down we will be in a better position to confirm and target a date for Ben to return, which fingers crossed, will not be too lengthy a process."
Lewis was brought to Morriston Hospital in Swansea after he was taken from the Liberty Stadium under the supervision of a club medic.
Ospreys coach Jonathan Humphreys was disappointed that the player was injured so soon after he had just returned to rugby.
The coach said, "Ben was playing exceptionally well for us. Having come on in the last three games and done very, very well he was looking forward to getting his chance in the number seven jersey."
Lewis had been out for 16 months after having two knee injuries. The player had only just forced his way back into the provincial squad and was hoping to make an impact with the club after previous injuries had threatened his career.
The player will hope to return soon, but the Ospreys have not said how long Lewis will be out of action for.
