Ospreys handed over a three-year contract to their youth development programme product Joe Rees
Swansea based Welsh Rugby Union club, Ospreys, have handed over a senior professional contract to their youth development programme product Joe Rees. The youngster has already represented the Wales national rugby union team during the Junior World Cup in
Argentina, in June, earlier this year.
Officials at the club have confirmed the signing of the versatile player on a three-year contract in a statement released on their website on Monday, July 18. The Ospreys contract is the young prop’s first professional rugby union contract.
The 20-year-old Rees is a Filton College product but started his rugby with the Mumbles RFC, and later also has played for the Tonmawr.
The Ospreys youth development programme product has already made two appearances for the Ospreys during the Anglo Welsh competition. He has played for 20 minutes in his two games against the Leicester Tigers and London Wasps for 17 and three minutes respectively.
Neath born Rees has expressed his delight on signing a deal with the Ospreys. He added, “I couldn't be at a better place to develop, it's my home region and I'm really happy to have signed a contract.”
Narrating his experience of playing in the senior squad last season, Rees termed the playing moments as enjoyable. He further added, “Just being involved with the senior squad is brilliant and hopefully this year with the World Cup, and a lot of our props
likely to be away, I'll get another chance.”
Ospreys’ forwards’ pack Coach Jonathan Humphreys has expressed his delight on Rees signing the professional contract. He added, “We are a region that develops young players and nowhere is that more apparent than in the front row.”
Humphreys has praised the skills and abilities of the young, talented and energetic Rees. He termed his as an “outstanding prospect.” He added that Rees has the potential and attitude to further improve and develop his game.
Humphreys has further praised the Ospreys developmental and coaching facilities particularly with reference to the development of tight-head props.
