Ossetia and Kosovo - what is the difference?

Question

Apart from the tactical media distraction by the Olympic games, what is a difference that would differentiate the Kosovo and Ossetia scenarios?

The Kosovo, being unilaterally introduced ,without the Serbian agreement on that issue, and Ossetia introduced without Georgian one... Kosovo being ethnically Albanic, Ossetia ethnically Russian. From my point of view Russia perfectly copied the Kosovan example. Why so much outrage abut the Ossetia, then?

Perfectly copied? Russia didn't stick to the disputed areas. They went into Georgia with tanks and planes with the intent of destroying Georgia's infrastructure. In their own words, to "punish" Georgia. Sorry, but who died and made them God?.  They killed many civilians in the process, then ransacked and burned ethnic Georgian houses in the disputed area. Does that sound like a "peacekeeper" to you?  In fact they are still holding the port of Poti.  Where is the parallel in Kosovo?

By the way, the UN action was NOT unilateral. The Russian action was.

The actual difference seems to be that the whole Kosovo stuff was authorized by the UN. I think that IS a difference, but on the other hand I think that Russia does have a point. If Russia had done it with some more decency and stopped at the borders of Georgia proper, Russia would have gained a great moral advantage since Georgia itself started the war. However, Russia overdid the thing.

On the whole, it seems that all sides are teeming with hypocrites. If there is such a thing as self-determination for nations, it must be applied for all nations.
