In Septemeber I'm starting my first IB year: the problem is that my english teacher told me to read the entire Othello drama and I'm pretty desperate cause its long and complicated and I have to finish it for the end of this summer. Can somebody help me giving me some ideas on how I can study Othello without getting crazy?

  1. You can buy study notes from bookshops that go through the whole play and explain it for you. It is a bit complicated on first read, but you will find it a lot easier using the study guide at the same time. Enjoy!

  2. Welcome to IB! I finnished IB and I really gotta say, just read it and get it over with. IB is all about suffering and giving up your social life, so you better get used to it. good luck and remember you will not be the only one going nuts, your classmates will as well and you'll all be a big not-so-happy crazy family! good luck with the stress mate.you'll need it

  3. There are films and recordings you can watch - but reading it should take no longer than the three hours it takes to perfom (treat yourself to an ice cream and chocs in the intervals).

  4. Relax - Shakespeare, in spite of what you may have heard, is fun.  Try to see the humour of it all - a laborious work Othello and consider also that at about the same time Queen Elizabeth of England was forcibly removing all black folk from England.

  5. Hi, I studied Othello last year and although it might be hard at first it is a good play. Here are some tips:

    1) Go to www.sparknotes.com and look at No Fear Shakespeare. It's a very helpful guide, including a summary of the plot and translation to modern day English.

    2) Buy yourself a study guide such as York Notes. They're very helpful and should help with language and theme.

    3) Watch a film or watch it on stage (you can probably get a DVD of a stage version too). This will help you understand it much better.

Here is a random tip: Watch out for animal imagery as you read. Notice as Iago becomes more evil and corrupt he uses more animal imagery.
