Other/cheaper ways of extending a wireless network?

Ok, I know about freeantennas.com and wifi repeaters (or more wired APs) but I'm thinking there must be a easier and cheaper way?

I've heard some 3rd party firmwares can boost the RF outbut but does that really work? Is it safe? (both for the hardware and people around it)

DD-WRT isn't compatible with Belkin hardware...are there others?

If I install 3rd party firmware can it be undone?

Hopefully someone out there has tried this stuff and can help!
