Question:

Other games like monopoly?

I like playing table game monopoly with my friends or family, but for my opinion monopoly has several minuses:

- it is very based on luck, while I want it to be based on risk and clever decisions

- it does not have a lot of possibilities: only buy-sell buildings and few others

To my mind, the game should have more possibilities to do like building your bank, building rural or city areas, making investitions into industry - just like the real economy. Although, the game should not be very hard to understand and let you choose from thousands of tactics. Does anyone know such like game(s)? Thank you!

  1. The best strategy game ever is Risk. It has simple rules, you will know what to after a single game and everyone understands what  it means to "conquer the world".

I used to play Monopoly until I came across Risk. Then I never looked back again ;-)

Want proof: Almost the entire masterpiece "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu is applicable to what you do in the game. The book has been used by many historical leaders, and the game will provide you the scene to experiment with strategic ideas. Just make sure you don't stab people in the back!

  2. Okay, so it's kinda lame, but The Farming Game is great! It's like Monopoly in some ways, but no one controls your cash flow but you. Your dice roll and your luck. Have Fun!

  3. What about one of those double sided jigsaw puzzels they claim you can never complete? Probably more a personal or family thing. Your friends may never want to return! Not that I play it, but I think Scrabble is one of the best games ever invented. You can learn how to play in a minute, and all ages can take it on. It teaches kids how to spell and maybe even learn a new word or two. I think all games should be educational in some small way.

  4. Nah not exactly. But have you ever played. Who Said That.

It is good. Just don't be on the same team as your partner. Otherwise according to my husband, it then changes the name to argument.

Just in case you don't know of it. It is a game of; Quote from famous people, ads, movies and cartoon characters.

You need to answer in under a minute.

    :-)

  5. That's all a little too advanced for a board game...no one wants to invest that much time in it...they just want to sit down and play and have fun.

If you want something like that, try the Sims computer games.  You build your towns and cities they way you want...divide by industry etc.

  6. Try Age of Mythology the board game.  It's pretty awesome.  Not as complicated as some of the more advanced games I've played (like Avalon Hill stuff), but more advanced and less luck than Monopoly, Risk, etc.

If you want some games that are pure strategy and no luck (or very little), try Avalon Hill games like 1830, History of the World, and Diplomacy.  They're a lot more advanced and take a lot more time to play though.

  7. Agreed with the Life answer.  That game is a close second to Monopoly.

  8. I like pictionary...you have to draw what word(s) you pick and the other team guesses.

Or RISK......where you control countries and take over the world lol.

  9. Scabble, Shoots n ladders, uno, other card games.jeopardy, wheel of furtunie, millionare, are you smarter than a firth grader. any many more. just google it and we what is out there and you like.

  10. Try the game of Life. There are two versions of it. The regular and the twists and turns version. For my opinion i would go with the twists and turns version. Sounds more fun.

  11. What about rumikin. it is a numbers games where you have to get ride of your tiles before anyone else.

or game of life. there are a lot of different types of

the game of life you must use strategy to get to the end before anyone else.

  12. Finance and Easy Money are monopoly-like.  You buy a property on each side before you can build.  Acquire and Hotels are in the high rise business.

  13. Only losers play board games.  You need to get a life...call me: (216) 269-0085

  14. I completely agree with your criticisms of Monopoly, and based on these, you should check out Power Grid, which is the game that Monopoly wishes it were.

Lots more interesting decisions, very little luck, yet some of the same feel in that you build a portfolio by buying the power plants and resources needed to run them.  Check out http://www.boardgamegeek.com, and look up Power Grid.  But be prepared -- there are > 20,000 games listed at Boardgamegeek, so you may spend a more than a litte while browsing.  A great community, though.

  15. Try Puerto Rico.  There's a lot you can do and it's not really luck- based much at all.

  16. Try the game of Life

  17. Several years ago their was a game called "Trump" as in Donald Trump.  It was a real estate game that may fit your desires.  The game was much more complex than Monopoly. I have not seen it in stores for years so your best bet is on E-Bay or second hand shops.

  18. Games like "Life" or "PayDay" are a little more varied.
