  1. China town, tough to find parking..

  2. Chinatown is also filled with loads of tat though.

Haight Ashbury is good for more unconventional stuff.

  3. There are lots of places to shop in SF. Enjoy, but don’t do too much damage to the Charge Cards!

Union Square – The shopping heart of SF. Every major retailer has a presence here. The area stretches from Sutter South to Market, and From Kearny on the East to Mason on the West. In addition to Boutiques and a wide range of vendors there are many art Galleries.

Westfield San Francisco Shopping Center on Market at Powell – Nordstrom occupies the top 3 floors and the lower three contain many popular and quality retailers. Bloomingdales is in the old Emporioum building next door and it shares space with 3 more floors of shops.

Chinatown – Enter through the Gate at Bush and Grant and wander up and down admiring the beautiful wares from China. This is the best place to pick up souvenirs for folks back home, lots of beautiful things or some tacky tourist stuff much cheaper than the shops at the wharf. Also venture one block over to Stocton for the sight of exotic foods to take home or eat there.

Hayes Valley – The four blocks along Hayes between Franklin and Octavia offer a wide variety of boutiques, house wares, and art items. Also great restaurant Choices, Absinthe, and Hays Street Grill are two I like very much.

Union Street – From Octavia to Fillmore this section of SF called Cow Hollow offers a wide range of mall type stores and boutiques.

Chestnut Street – In the Marina, from Fillmore to Scott Street, like doing a mall outdoors. Still a few unique stores and boutiques.

Valencia Street – From 15th to 22nd. This is the Latin heart of the city with a lot of home stores, chic boutiques, and funky vintage stores. Also great Mexican food along this route.

Noe Valley – 24th from Diamond to Church, a wide array of jewelry shops, boutiques, vintage stores, books and other wares.

Clement Street – Between 2nd and 10th in the Richmond. This is a sort of 2nd Chinatown, but with less import items and more boutiques, book stores [including Green Apple, the best book store in SF] and lots of great restaurants.

Upper Fillmore – From Geary to Jackson a wide range of boutiques, furniture stores, good restaurants and some unique consignment stores, and one of the most fabulous hat shops I’ve ever seen. And believe me, after collecting for 20 years, this gal knows hats!

Haight Asbury – Yes the famous summer of love lives on here. Funky shops, vintage stores, a few chain stores and the most eclectic street scene you ever encounter.

Ferry Building – The clock tower building at the base of Market street is the most upscale Farmers market you’ll ever see. Fresh foods and flower on Tuesday here in a tent city that comes every week.

Embarcadero Center – The other Downtown shopping center. Right across from the Ferry Building 4 buildings and three floors of shops, restaurants and movie theaters.

  4. Depends on what you like. If your thrifty, try Ross on Market and 4th Street, Downtown San Francisco.

If you like expensive jewelry and clothing try the shops around Union Square. There is also a Westin Mall on Market Street near 4th Street. You can also goto the Embaracdero that is at the end of market street and if your looking for something quiet interesting Head to Castro Street and Market. Lots of interesting things to see and shop.

But if your just a tourist that is looking for touristy stuff defiantly goto Chinatown. Grant Street. Between Bush and Broadway you can find just about any touristy good bargains.

  5. Union square is up scale - but really fun.

China town give you tons of stuff that you can't always find in other places, and really reasonable. Plus there are dozens of really great Asian restaurants.
