Ottawa Senator teammates battle in race for 1000 points
Ottawa Senators head coach, Cory Clouston, and general manager Bryan Murray, are first and foremost be hoping for a solid season from their entire team, that will hopefully translate into a play-off berth in April. But they will also be beaming with pride
much sooner than that, as two of their players stand on the verge of a remarkable milestone.
Fowards Daniel Alfredsson and Alex Kovalev are both on the verge of reaching 1000 career points. The 37-year-old Russian, Kovalev, goes into this season just 10 points shy of the mark with 990 regular season points. The 37-year-old Swede, Alfredsson, will
start the season off just 8 points back of 1000 with 992 points.
Neither one is placing bets on who will be first to reach the plateau. Kovalev, though, has described what he feels is the ideal scenario. "Like I mentioned before, when I came to this team,
I don’t compete against our own guys," he said. "I’m not going to compete with who gets there first, but I was kind of thinking the other day that it would be nice if we get 2-on-1 (goal), and both get (1,000 points) at the same time."
Kovalev did also point out that he would prefer to reach the mark with a goal, rather than playing the role of provider.
Alfredsson is also not looking at the situation as any type of race and, as always, his focus will be on winning games, but he did hint at the fact that he has thought about how he would like to reach the plateau, “I think it will just happen when it happens,
for both of us,” said Alfredsson. “I’m not looking at it as a race. I’m just going to try to put it in the back of my mind. I know it’s there but at the same time I’m not going to go chase it."
“The only thing I think I wish for is [that] it happens at home.”
The Senators begin their season on Friday night, October 8, at home against the Buffalo Sabres.
