Ottawa Senators' Daniel Alfredsson, Mats Sundin discuss retirement -NHL Update
Ottawa Senators fans might have shown the world through numerous ways these past few days that they want captain, Daniel Alfredsson, to continue playing, at least for another National Hockey League (NHL) season but according to former Toronto Maple Leafs’
Mats Sundin, only he can make that decision himself.
Mats Sundin is one of those players that will always live in the hearts of fans for his outstanding career in the NHL with Toronto Maple Leafs. Sundin, along with Detroit Red Wings’ captain, Nicklas Lidstrom, are believed to have been approached by Alfredsson
seeking some advice on whether he should retire now or not.
“To play at the NHL level, there is so much training you must do in the off-season. And there comes a time you just don’t have the desire anymore. Nobody else can tell you when that time comes. You just know yourself. That’s what I told him,” Sundin said.
While it might not be easy to decide whether to retire or not, there is one thing that might force Alfredsson to do so and that is his health. Going out of the league in a healthy manner is what players hope for and seeing how he had concussion scares earlier
in the postseason, there are always chances that it might be the reason he will have to leave instead of choosing.
“I know I need to have that desire to get ready for another year,” Alfredsson said in April. “If you don’t, it will be a very frustrating year for me personally just going through the motions. You have to bring everything you have to the table to be honest
with the team and with yourself.”
Up until now, Daniel Alfredsson has played in 15 plus season straight with Ottawa Senators and has seen more than his fair share of the hockey world. Having played 1,131 games with a point total of 1,082 (416 goals, 666 assists), Alfredsson definitely is
one of the best to ever have graced the game.
He nearly led the Ottawa Senators to a Stanley Cup championship back in 2007 having played 20 games and potting 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists).
Updates on whether the player is decided to stay or call it a day are expected in the upcoming days.
