Ottawa Senators Chris Phillips Begs to Differ from Mark Recchi over Labour Deal Remarks -NHL Update
There are a handful of players that have made remarks in favour of team owners and the National Hockey League (NHL) ever since talks over a new collective bargaining agreement kicked off earlier in June, but Mark Recchi of the Boston Bruins has been of the
surprising ones.
According to Recchi, the Players’ Association and its members should accept the latest deal by the league, since for him, it is the best that they are going to get out of the franchise owners. Otherwise, the lockout will continue until they cave in and that
could mean locking out the entire 2012-2013 NHL regular season. For fans, that might be something that they will have to do at some point or another for some progress, but whatever the case, most players are not ready to do that, whatever the cost could be.
“I guess I would say it’s an uninformed answer, unless he’s now tied in with ownership somewhere, or wants to get involved with ownership, and trying to take that side,” Phillips said Tuesday of Recchi, according to OttawaSun.com. “Unless you’re on the calls
all the time or know exactly what’s going on ... I don’t know what those comments are based on, because he’s not involved.”
Being someone who has seen 14 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, defenseman Chris Phillips is certainly capable of talking back. Recchi is a veteran and so is Chris Phillips. The 34-year-old is a former first overall draft pick of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft
and has been a valuable source of energy for the Senators ever since.
For Recchi, the longer they spend in the negotiation process, the more impatient and unwilling the league will get in terms of wanting to consider what the players have to say. But Phillips answers it by saying, that the team owners are the ones who will
lose out in the end.
“There’s obviously negotiating to be done,” said Phillips. “So, yeah, it’s going to get better. Of course it’s going to get better. It’s going to get better for both sides. There’s got to be some give and take.
