Ottawa Senators Erik Condra signs with German third-division club EV Fussen -NHL Update
Erik Condra, the Ottawa Senators right winger, became the latest casualty of the lockout for the Canadian, National Hockey League (NHL) franchise as he signed on with a third-division German club, EV Fussen.
According to reports by the Ottawa Sun, the 26-year-old is scheduled to play with the club as soon as this upcoming Friday.
For some players, these leagues are rather for development instead of competitive playing, but some players like Erik Condra could certainly benefit from the overseas experience.
“It’s not real good hockey,” said John Chabot, who is running the NHL player workouts during the lockout at the Sensplex and played in Germany, according to the Ottawa Sun. “It’s almost like a development league. I don’t want to downgrade the level. It’s
better to play. It’s junior hockey. It will be 1-on-4 for him sometimes. The other teams key on the imports.”
It has also been learned that Condra has signed on to a one month deal in order to continue playing during the lockout and will be able to leave once the NHL regular season gets back on track if the league and Players’ Association make gains in the upcoming
days.
Condra is a native of Trenton, Missouri, United States, and was drafted by the Ottawa Senators as the 211th overall back in round-seven of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He has two seasons of experience in the North American major league up until now.
His first was back in 2010-2011 as he registered 26 games with 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) followed by 81 games in the next and eight goals, 17 assists for a total of 25 points.
Dave Rich, who is the coach for the Fussen club, is excited to be getting a player of Condra’s calibre and hopes it will be a win-win situation for both.
“He’s really coming over here on his own doing,” said Dave Rich. “We’re just a small team. It was sort of a shock to hear him say yes.”
Last season, Condra proved to be a valuable asset as he picked up a plus rating of 11 and 30 minutes in penalty time as well. He is also under contract with the Ottawa Senators, to a two-year, $1.25 million deal.
