Ottawa Senators Erik Karlsson faces Suspension in Finnish League after Throwing Stick -NHL Update
It is hard not to get aggressive during a hockey matchup, but it is hard to agree with the incident that took place in the Finnish Hockey League as Ottawa Senators’ Erik Karlsson threw his stick in anger at a referee after facing a 4-2 loss.
Karlsson, one of the Senators’ leading defensemen and well known names in the National Hockey League (NHL), was handed down a one-game suspension following the incident, which took place in the final game of the season before a break n the schedule.
The 22-year-old is currently a member of Jokerit in the SM-Liiga and faced a loss to TPS Turku on December 8, 2012. He is reported now to be back in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and is set to stay until the season kicks off again in Finland and if the lockout
remains unsettled between the league and Players’ Association.
In a total of 27 games played in the Finnish league up until now, he has potted a total of 24 points, consisting of seven goals along with 24 minutes in penalty time.
Erik Karlsson is a native of Landsbro, Sweden, and was picked up by the Ottawa Senators as the 15th overall back in round-one of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
At the moment, Karlsson has played a total of three seasons for the Ottawa Senators. The last season, 2011-2012, was a breakthrough for the youngster as he registered 78 points (19 goals, 59 assists) in 81 games played with 42 minutes in the penalty box,
putting him as one of the leading defenders. His opening season back in 2009-2010 was of 26 points (5 goals, 21 assists) in 60 games, followed by another great performance of 45 points (13 goals, 32 assists) in 75 games.
In total, Karlsson has 216 games played in his career and 149 points (37 goals, 112 assists). He also has also participated in two Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Ottawa Senators.
Ottawa Senators locked Karlsson on prior to the lockout, to a seven-year, $45.5 million contract, giving him an annual salary cap hit of $6.5 million and will make him an unrestricted free agent by the end of the 2018-2019 regular season.
