Ottawa Senators Jason Spezza Contemplating Exit from Swiss League Team -NHL Update
Jason Spezza, a leading playing for the Ottawa Senators, is reported to be contemplating an early exit from Switzerland, where he is currently playing with Rapperswil-Jona of the Swiss ‘A’ League during the lockout.
The 29-year-old veteran is supposedly looking forward to play for Team Canada in the up and coming Spengler Cup during the holiday season, but may be returning home after that, but no confirmative reason has been cited by the player as of yet.
“I have already informed the leaders of Hockey Canada that I was willing to participate in the Spengler Cup during the holiday season,” Spezza told Le Droit hockey writer Sylvain St-Laurent in Switzerland, according to CalgarySun.com. “After that, we’ll
see.”
Spezza is a native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and was drafted by the Ottawa Senators as the second overall back in round-one of the 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft. The veteran centre position player has participated with Ottawa nine seasons
up until now and has become an integral part of the major league franchise. He had one of his better season this past hockey year with 84 points (34 goals, 50 assists) in 80 games played, but is yet to match his career high of 92 points, 34 goals and 58 assists
of 2007-2008.
In a total of 606 games played in the North American profession hockey league up until now, Spezza boasts 616 points, of which 226 are goals and the remaining 390 are assists, along with 386 minutes in penalty time.
Jason Spezza is also locked on to a long term deal with the Ottawa Senators to a seven-year contract, worth an estimated $49 million, which will come to an end following the 2014-2015 NHL regular season.
There is yet to be any confirmation from his side whether the player is actually going to be making a move since as of now, Spezza is just planning on leaving the Swiss team. His contract may have also come to an end, but the Swiss ‘A’ League team may just
consider signing him to an extension while keeping the limitless lockout in mind.
