Ottawa Senators-New York Rangers Quarterfinal Series Review -NHL Playoffs Special
Daniel Alfredsson’s presence on the team made a huge impact indeed for Ottawa Senators as they rebounded from an extremely disappointing season to making the playoffs in the next. Going up against New York Rangers, Senators worked hard at keeping the Canadian
Stanley Cup hopes alive, but unfortunately, lost in seven games.
Despite the loss and another year that Canada had to go without the Stanley Cup, making it the 18th straight, Ottawa Senators and the fans are content to where they were able to go and how they nearly managed to oust the top Eastern Conference
team.
The Senators and Rangers series was always viewed as one of the most thrilling and highly anticipated of the postseason and when it did kick off, it was hard to imagine that players were actually hockey players instead of professional wrestlers.
The series was outright intense in every meaning of the word as it became a battle between Canada and the USA for the battle of glory, pride and the Stanley Cup.
Senators might have lost, but they gained a lot as well and are hopeful for the next hockey year to come.
"A great series," Ottawa coach, Paul MacLean, said after the series. "But we're really excited about our team and the steps we took season [after] how we started. We talked all season about building blocks and building blocks and building a foundation. The
last month we really grew as a team. ... We're really pleased with our group going home."
Game 1
With the first of the series being at the Madison Square Garden, both teams were pumped up to take a lead in the contest. New York put up a good battle and Ottawa tried hard in the final 10 minutes to level it up but failed as Rangers took the win, 4-2.
Game 2
Ottawa wowed the New York crowd again as they took a dominating stance and levelled it with the series heading back to Senators territory for Game 3 and 4.
Chris Neil made the game-winning shot as the match went into overtime after Nick Foligno shot an amazing equalising goal at 15:23 in the third.
Game 3
The series was in Canada now and Ottawa was looking to use the home crowd to their advantage. Both goalies shutout the opposition for the first two periods but Craig Anderson fell short in the final 20 minutes as Brian Boyle made the game-winning goal at
7:35, taking a lead in the series with a 1-0 victory.
Game 4
Ottawa was not ready to be put on the verge of elimination as the Senators rallied in the second period to level the match at 2-2 while it was rookie forward, Kyle Turris, who shined with the overtime golden goal.
Game 5
Jason Spezza scored the only two goals of the night while Ottawa goalie, Craig Anderson, blocked all 30 shots for a 2-0 shutout, forcing a Game 6 matchup with New York on the brink of being eliminated.
Game 6
Amazingly, Rangers rebounded and denied Senators a comeback with a 3-2 win, forcing a Game 7 competition at the Madison Square Garden.
Game 7
New York’s defensemen stepped up when the offence died down as Marc Staal and Dan Girardi scored the two winning goals, eliminating Ottawa at home and advancing to the next series against Washington Capitals.
