Ottawa Senators agree with Kyle Turris on five-year Contract Extension -NHL Update
The Ottawa Senators did not waste any time in signing newly acquired youngster from Phoenix Coyotes, Kyle Turris, to a five-year contract, keeping him on the Canadian, National Hockey League (NHL), franchise for the next six seasons to come.
Turris still has one-year left on his standard, two-year, $2.8 million deal and would have become a restricted free agent by the end of the 2012-2013 NHL regular season. The new extension will make him unrestricted on July 1, 2018.
His previous deal gave him a maximum salary cap hit of $1.4 million, but the new contract assures the player will be getting $3.5 million each season, well deserved and earned according to hockey gurus around the league.
Ottawa Senators gave Phoenix a promising defenseman, David Rundblad, and a second-round pick for the youngster and hope that their investment will pay off as they see in him a future leader with a lot of potential.
"I'm really excited," said Turris, according to NHL.com. "I love it here in Ottawa. I love being part of the organization and the people in it and the hockey team we have here. I'm really looking forward to being here the next six years, and hopefully past
that.”
Bryan Murray, Ottawa Senators general manager, sees in him a player that will lead the Canadian club in the future and matches his strength with some top-level players in the league.
According to his latest statement, Murray is going to be using the young forward on the second line to give Ottawa some real depth on that end.
"He's a very creative type of player … he's very competitive," Murray said. "The thing that Kyle seems to have greatly improved upon is his strength. I think than in itself will make him a more productive player. He gave us a real solid center to complement
Jason Spezza, and we like what he delivered. He gave us a chance -- pretty much every night -- to give us a real, creative second line.”
Turris was selected as the third overall back in 2007 by Phoenix and up until now, has 75 points (31 goals, 44 assists) in 186 games played.
