Ottawa Senators aspiring defenseman Jared Cowen hopes to land spot on team-NHL offseason Update
It has been over two years since Ottawa Senators former top draft pick, Jared Cowen, was selected as the ninth player overall during round-one of the 2009 National Hockey league (NHL) Entry Draft, and having played only one game since, he hopes that the
tryouts this time around, will bear more fruit for him in the end.
Being a defenseman, Cowen has big shoes to fill on the team which has had players like now Boston Bruins captain, Zdeno Chara and Chris Phillips playing the position. For Cowen, it is not something which would pressurise him in any way.
"No, not at all", Cowen said. "I think I just keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully I'll get to be like them one day. (Chara and Phillips) are pretty good players to compare myself to -- if I have the same expectations that they have for themselves, that
will be OK".
Saturday, September 10, marked the day which 23 aspiring players, hopeful for a position on the Canadian squad would be the last day of training and the beginning of their rookie tournament, which is to be held in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
According to Ottawa Senators general manager, Bryan Murray, Cowen just might make it this time.
"He's certainly looks like he's ready", GM Murray said.
After his single NHL game with Ottawa during the 2009-2010 season, Cowen returned to play for his original minor league team, Spokane Chiefs, in the Western Hockey League (WHL). The 20-year-old also played twice onboard Team Canada during the World Junior
Championships.
Cowen faced difficulty during the past seasons but believes that he has improved on his playing abilities and pressure handling skills.
"I think I'm smoother and a better skater", Cowen said. "I feel like I'm stronger on my skates, which is a big deal with you're out there with bigger guys and they're trying to push you around".
Regarding the rookie camps as a warm-up for him, Jared Cowen is more confident than ever and thinks that now the time is right for him to finally play in the major league with Ottawa Senators.
