Ottawa Senators bounce back against Boston Bruins in 1-0 shutout -NHL Update
Playing their second game against Boston in three nights, Ottawa was determined not to go down this time around and that is exactly what they did as the Senators shutout Bruins, 1-0, Tuesday night, February 28, 2012, at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Bruins dominated Senators in their last meeting on Saturday, 5-3, but Ottawa has definitely changed since then as they grabbed their second straight victory following the defeat.
Ottawa bumped up to the fifth number position with 76 points but may not be permanent as sixth place Philadelphia Flyers are currently battling it out with San Jose Sharks and could potentially put Senators back a spot.
Senators have definitely shown huge prospects this season, especially following the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Game break. Players like Erik Karlsson have picked up their game and despite missing main goalie, Craig Anderson, the defence is
looking strong.
Karlsson kicked off the scoring with his 15th goal of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season on their second straight power play opportunity. Boston rookie, Tyler Seguin, was booked at the 13:06 mark in the opening period, giving Ottawa an ample chance
to capitalise with the extra skater on board.
"I think the last game we played them at home, we played a little too cautious," Ottawa captain, Daniel Alfredsson, said. "This game, we came out and took our chances."
Both teams failed to capitalise on any attempt during the second round, including a power play advantage for Ottawa as Milan Lucic of Boston was called for slashing and awarded a minor penalty.
Karlsson’s only goal of the night proved to be of immense value for the visiting team as Robin Lehner blocked all 32 attempts by Boston Bruins on his net throughout the contest.
Tim Thomas on the other hand, faced slightly more shots at 38 and fell short on one single attempt, which eventually cost them the game.
"The first two periods were really painful to watch and see," Boston coach, Claude Juilen, said. "You need your goalie to be good on these types of nights to give you a chance. He was good and gave us a chance."
Ottawa is certainly eyeing a third consecutive victory as they return home to host Chicago Blackhawks on Friday while Boston Bruins play against New Jersey Devils on Thursday.
