Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson to return for 17th season -NHL Update
Ottawa Senators and fans are relieved to hear of the news that their captain and leading player, Daniel Alfredsson, will be playing another regular season in the National Hockey League (NHL), making it his 17th.
The team happily made the announcement after negotiating with the player over the terms and conditions of his new deal after the four-year contract between him and Ottawa Senators, worth $19.5 million came to an end.
Fortunately, many fans were able to breathe easier after the team began to struggle by devising a backup plan in case the veteran decided to call it his final year.
"I'm excited to get ready for another season," Alfredsson said. "I've been training for about a month and a half, and my body feels a lot further ahead of where it was last year at this point. I expect to come into camp stronger and fitter than I did last
year."
At the age of 39, Daniel Alfredsson has been the heart and soul for the team he has spent 17 straight seasons with. He failed to play a major role in 2010-2011 due to a severe concussion but made a comeback last season with 59 points (27 goals, 32 assists)
in 75 games and getting Senators back into the playoffs.
"Daniel's contributions to this hockey team cannot be understated," general manager, Bryan Murray, said. "He is a leader and a mentor to many of our young players. Daniel is also a great hockey player and we expect him to return and continue to be one of
our best players as we look to improve on last year's accomplishments."
Senators’ owner, Eugene Melnyk, has also appreciated the return of Daniel Alfredsson and regards him to be the best ever in franchise history. Ottawa Senators might have him back for the next hockey year, but planning out who will lead the club after he
leaves for sure is the next step and requirement.
Daniel Alfredsson was picked up by Ottawa Senators as the 133rd overall back in round-six of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. In 1,131 games played so far, the Swedish champion had 1,082 points (416 goals, 666 assists).
