Ottawa Senators continue climb with third straight win over Edmonton Oilers 5-2 -NHL Match Update
Ottawa continued to climb up in the Eastern Conference while Edmonton plummeted in the Western side even further as the Senators won their third straight contest over the Oilers, 5-2, who lost their fourth game in a row, Thursday night, November 17, 2011,
at the sold-out Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Edmonton had only two wins in its six-game road trip to kick of the month of November and los another one at home now, for their worst record since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season began.
The Senators on the other hand have not had in so good in recent years. They now stand at number eight in the Eastern Conference, tied with the Florida Panthers who have 21 points each. Winning their upcoming games will easily allow them to slide into the
top four positions in the division.
"We had a tough start to the season and we have come a long ways since," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "We know where we want to be and that's what the season is for, to build and learn and get better. We are giving ourselves chances right now."
Colin Greening, Kaspars Daugavins and Milan Michalek scored three straight in the opening period to put the Senators ahead with a commanding 3-0 lead.
Greening and Daugavins scored their goals only nine seconds apart which had the 16,000 plus home crowd go wild in seeing their team pot goals so quickly.
Michalek extended and widened the gap with his 12th of the season to be the highest scoring player on the Ottawa line-up.
Ottawa had only 16 attempts on the Edmonton net while the Oilers outshot them with their 24, but veteran Senators goalie, Craig Anderson remained focused and blocked 22 to help the visiting to strong with the lead.
Anton Lander potted Edmonton’s first shorthanded to put not only his team, but himself on the scoreboards with his inaugural goal of the season, but Jesse Winchester washed away his hard work by also scoring his first of the season nearly five minutes later.
Zenon Konopka took the score far out of Edmonton reach as Ryan Jones scored another Edmonton goal with less than a minute to go, making it impossible for the team to come back.
