Ottawa Senators defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in over-time – NHL Recap
The Ottawa Senators beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in over-time at the Scotiabank Place on Saturday. The Senators are out of the National Hockey League play-off picture, but they were looking to spoil the Lightning attempt at gaining some points, as they
have dropped to the fifth spot in the standings.
The Lightning was on top of the game at the start, as they managed to grab a goal to get into the lead. On the other hand, the Senators could not get past the opposing team, as the Lightning came up with a solid defensive effort. The Senators made a few
shots on goal, but were unable to score, as the Lightning put it in the net once again to double their lead. The final period saw the Senators scoring twice to level the scores at the end of regulation time. The game went into over-time, where the Senators
scored to win the game 3-2. Jason Spezza was named the Star of the Game, as he scored the game winning goal.
The Lightning started the game aggressively, as they fired shot on goal and came up with some easy scoring chances. Despite the away disadvantage, the Lightning managed to score in the seventh minute through a decent flick-shot by Vincent Lecavalier to take
the lead. The period ended with the Lightning leading 1-0. During the first period, the Lighting made 13 shots on goal, while their tight defence restricted the opposition to only three attempts on goal.
The second period began with the both teams firing shots on goal and displaying some excellent ice hockey. The Lightning’s Dana Tyrell managed to score from a superb back-hand shot to double their advantage 2-0. During the second period both teams made 9
shots on goal.
The final period saw the Senators being more productive of the two teams, as they scored in the 13th minute through Ryan Shannon and then through Nick Foligno from a decent strike to level the score. Both teams were strong on the offence, but
they were unable to score any further goals.
The period ended with the score level on 2-2, as the game went into over-time. The Senators’ Jason Spezza scored from a simple tip-in shot to win the game 3-2. Both teams fought hard and it will be interesting to see how the Senators carry their winning
momentum forward for the remainder of the season.
