Ottawa Senators dominate Eastern leaders New York Rangers 4-1 -NHL Update
Ottawa continued to roll with newly acquired goalie, Ben Bishop, in front of the net as Senators dominated Eastern Conference leading team, New York Rangers, 4-1, Thursday night, March 8, 2012, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
With a huge win over Rangers, Ottawa has showed that they are not only able to take down normal competitors but also the big wigs in the National Hockey League (NHL) as well.
Ben Bishop was on his way to get a first shutout on the Ottawa team but unfortunately let one goal slide through for a total of 25 saves, keeping the All-Star New York roster at bay.
"Bishop played unbelievable," Senators’ defenseman, Jared Cowen, said. "I think that's a good thing for us because going down the stretch goalies are huge and he's already been a big part of the team for us."
The new Ottawa goalie also played a major role in their previous on the road victory against Tampa Bay Lightning, 7-3, and now one at home certainly boosts the confidence of the young defender.
"It was a big team win, but for myself it was just nice to get my first one at home and get that under my belt and focus for Saturday," Bishop said.
Rangers’ captain, Ryan Callahan, attempted at taking the lead and working on it for his team with a quick goal at 4:36 of the opener. But Ottawa was right behind him as Zack Smith levelled the game a little over a minute later and Nick Foligno took the extension
at 18:50.
After a scoreless second period, Kyle Turris and Jason Spezza scored two straight for Ottawa in the final 20 minutes of regulation, sealing the fate of both teams.
"It wasn't good to let in that first one," Bishop added. "I think the team responded great getting a goal right back and we didn't give up many chances and we didn't give up too many rebounds."
Ottawa has one more at home before taking off as they host Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
New York Rangers have some ground to regain and get out of their two losses now as they are set to playoff against Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.
