Ottawa Senators’ general manager Bryan Murray looking to make a deal after slow start
When things go wrong in the National Hockey League, there are many paths that can lead to a solution. In the case of the Ottawa Senators, general manager Bryan Murray believes that the
answer might be to make a few moves.
The Senators have had a slow start to the 2010-11 NHL season, going 1-4-1 in their first six games. The wins have just not been coming for the team, mostly due to their uninspired play.
In their most recent game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they were beaten by a score of 5-2. The players later received punishment in the form of a bag skate during practice.
“It’s up to all of us, this is a team,” Murray said of his team’s recent struggles. “It’s not the coaches or players only; it’s me doing anything I can.”
Murray has indicated that the winds of change may soon be blowing into Canada’s capital, as he believes a shake-up to the roster may change the team’s attitude.
“I’ve talked to a number of people,” Murray explained. "I talked to (Minnesota Wild general manager) Chuck Fletcher for a long time yesterday and said, ‘can I help you, you help me’ type
of thing, so we’re talking to management of other teams, trying to find if there is a need and possibility of making a move.”
Shipping players off to other teams is not always the best way to solve this kind of problem, but according to Murray, changes to the team’s roster may resonate with the players.
“That’s not always a solution, but maybe it sends a little message to our players,” Murray said.
The Sens will have a chance to pick up their second win of the season and possibly change Murray’s mind when they face the Buffalo Sabres at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Friday, 22 October.
