Ottawa Senators get hotter with huge 6-0 win over New York Islanders -NHL Update
New York could not have had it any worse as Ottawa Senators played mercilessly and grabbed their third consecutive win to get hotter as the season enters its final stages with a huge 6-0 shutout victory against the struggling Islanders club on Monday night,
February 20, 2012, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
As a formality, Ottawa Senators head coach, Paul MacLean, was asked what he thought about his team’s performance against Islanders and answered in a confident way.
"Six-to-nothing. That sums it up pretty well," said Senators coach Paul MacLean.
Ottawa has been averaging more than four goals a game for the past three matchups as they similarly shutout the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-0, earlier last Tuesday followed by a big win against Florida Panthers, 6-2, and now even better against New York.
"I thought our team was really ready to play. Scoring in the first minutes, getting two goals in the first 90 seconds, was good. It was a good sign of our preparation and our willingness to compete today against a team that we knew was going to be able to
skate real well. ... We were very pleased with how we started and how we ended," MacLean added.
Senators did not wait till later on in the match as they kicked off the scoring right in the opening minutes.
Erik Karlsson grabbed his 11th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season on a breakaway at 1:08 into the opening period while Jason Spezza picked up his 26th of the year 27 seconds later and Erik Karlsson capped it
off with the third at 14:03.
Chris Phillips widened the gap to 4-0 midway through the second period on a power play opportunity while Brian Lee registered his first of the season at the same time in the third and final period.
Jason Spezza potted the final of the night for his 27th on the power play once again to take the match completely out of the Islanders hands.
Ottawa will be a team to keep under observation as they have the next three at home, starting off against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.
New York Islanders will be playing against Buffalo Sabres a day earlier on Tuesday.
