Ottawa Senators rally in final period to beat Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 – NHL Update
A dominant third period by the Ottawa Senators, in which they scored four goals and blocked all attempts on their net, earned them a victory over Philadelphia Flyers, 6-4, at the Scotiabank Place, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on Sunday, January 8, 2012.
The Senators were trailing by two goals when the third period started, and the same happened with the Flyers, when the game ended.
Five of the Senators’ players scored a goal each and goalie, Craig Anderson, saved 33 shots to give his team its fifth victory in the last six games.
"We have all the right qualities. Obviously we'd like to be winning games by two goals going into the third instead of losing, but regardless, we get the result we wanted," Anderson said.
"This is a special team and we're able to do it, night in and night out. Put together 20 solid minutes of our best hockey and come out on top. It's good to know that if you make the save and give the guys the opportunity, you do have a chance to win the
game."
At the start of the game, Ottawa Senators’ captain, Daniel Alfredsson, scored his 14th goal of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season to give the Senators a lead. He was assisted by Kyle Turris and Jared Cowen.
Within two minutes, Flyers equalised the score as Andrej Meszaros, assisted by Maxime Talbot, scored his sixth goal of the season, taking the score to 1-1.
Senators once again gained the lead when Chris Neil, assisted by Nick Foligno and Erik Karlsson, scored at the 8:25 mark.
Flyers gave a perfect response by levelling the scores one more time.
Danny Briere assisted Marc-Andre Bourdon who scored his second goal of the season.
After 30 seconds, Flyers finally managed to take the lead, thanks to an assist by Matt Read, who set up Sean Couturier for his team's third goal.
Flyers continued to press the opponents in the second period.
They prevented Senators from reducing the deficit and scored another goal. At the 14:08 mark, James van Riemsdyk and Matt Carle assisted Matt Read for his 13th goal of the season.
Entering the third period, when the Flyers were leading by two goals, Senators did not give up.
At 3:11, Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek assisted Colin Greening who took the score to 3-4.
Around three minutes later, Erik Karlsson scored the equaliser for the Senator.
Levelling the scores, the Senators began marching forward. With 1:11 seconds left on the clock, Filip Kuba gave them an edge assisted by Erik Condra and Daniel Alfredsson for his fourth goal of the season.
Senators extended their lead in the last minute when Nick Foligno scored his 12th goal of the season.
Flyers got their two-game winning streak snapped and are now going to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 10, while Senators take on Pittsburgh Penguins on the same day.
