Ottawa Senators re-sign Peter Regin to one-year, one-way deal –NHL Update
If it could not get any worse than having two season ending shoulder surgeries, Peter Regin was forced to take a pay cut if he wanted to stay with the Ottawa Senators, as both stake holders signed a one-year, one-way deal on Friday, May 4, 2012.
The 26-year-old centre played just 10 games in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season before needing to have another surgical procedure on the same shoulder that forced him to play only 55 games the season before that.
Regin was scared that Ottawa would obviously lose interest in him, especially after they found a younger replacement by the name of Kyle Turris from the Phoenix Coyotes, but as the Senators re-signed him, they showed that was still needed on the club.
It might have required a $200,000 a year pay cut from his previous two-year, $2 million deal, but Regin will be working towards proving himself to the team in the upcoming season on a one-year, $800,000 contract.
“My shoulder is feeling really good and I will be back to 100 per cent when camp starts,” Regin said Friday. “I’m going to stay here in Ottawa for most of the season, or at least the next two months. I’m going to start skating soon, and it will be nice to
get back on the ice and feel like a hockey player again.”
The young forward definitely does have potential as he secured a spot after battling for it during last year’s training camps and then registered two goals and assists in just 10 games before having to go out again.
Senators are definitely happy as well and hope that next season could be a breakthrough for the player, not only for his career but for the Ottawa team as well.
“We’re very happy to get Peter into the fold,” Senators assistant general manager, Tim Murray, said. “He has had a tough two years with injuries, but when he was not injured he was certainly a top-nine forward (capable of playing on the top three lines)
with good offensive skills.”
Ottawa made the playoffs and nearly got past the first round against a team like the New York Rangers. Right now, they need all the firepower they can get and Peter Regin just might be the answer they are looking for.
