Ottawa Senators ready to celebrate 20th anniversary season in big way –NHL offseason Update
It has been 20 years now since Ottawa Senators joined the National Hockey League (NHL) as a franchise, which is of course, a time to celebrate, and celebration is exactly what the Eastern Conference club has in mind once the new 2011-2012 regular season
kicks off in October.
Vancouver Canucks, another Canadian team, which turned 40 last season, might not have pre-planned any celebration or special events, but certainly did end off their anniversary season in a big way, which was reaching the Stanley Cup Finals and almost winning
it for the first time in franchise history.
Ottawa on the other hand, has a plan in mind regarding their anniversary which is solely for the appreciation of their fans over the past 20 years.
Team president, Cyril Leeder, was present for a press conference to make the announcement about future scheduled events.
"This will be a special season for Senators fans", Leeder said. "From the All-Star game to a new heritage jersey and special promotions and tributes, we look to recognize the great moments from the last 20 years, while embracing why hockey makes us such
big Senators fans".
Plans for the new season which is set to kick off on October 11, when Ottawa hosts Minnesota Wild, include a heritage jerseys, opening night guests which will be the 1992-1993 Senators team along with special tributes to teams that have won 11 Stanley Cups
playing from and representing the city of Ottawa.
Daniel Alfredsson, captain of Senators, was also present at the occasion and discussed how the All-Star game was scheduled for next season in Ottawa, which would make their 20th anniversary even more exciting.
"I have been part of this team and this community for more than 16 years", Alfredsson said. "Having the All-Star game here as we celebrate our 20th anniversary will make this season a special one for the fans, both on and off the ice".
For some fans, it certainly might be an emotional moment as they revisit history with their favourite team and relive the moments they watched growing up, while for others this will provide an opportunity to learn about one of hockey’s greatest teams.
