Ottawa Senators reported to be going in strong to acquire Columbus Blue Jackets' Rick Nash -NHL Update
Ottawa Senators are reportedly getting ready and planning vigorously on how they might be able to strike a deal with Columbus Blue Jackets captain and hottest commodity of the National Hockey League (NHL) offseason, Rick Nash.
With teams such as New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and a number of others willing to give it all up for a chance to negotiate with the superstar captain, Ottawa Senators have also joined the race and are preparing a package of their own.
According to latest reports, the Ottawa Senators are creating a package in order to appeal to Columbus Blue Jackets by offering 2011 first round pick, Mika Zibanejad, along with Nick Foligno and goalie Ben Bishop.
For now there have not been any official announcements made by the team but insiders have termed the Ottawa front office going wild in order to try and secure one of the hottest players on the market this year.
There is no surprise to see why Rick Nash would be attempting to leave the Blue Jackets, since the Columbus team has barely made the playoffs in the past decade. At the age of 28, Rick Nash does not want to leave his original team but is rather forced to
in order for his career to actually mean something.
One of the biggest problems that can be for any team around the league is the huge salary cap space they would have to reserve for the player that is going to enter his third year on an eight-year massive contract worth $62.4 million, requiring anywhere
from $7.8 million to a whopping $8.2 million a year.
For Columbus Blue Jackets, Zibanejad might be the most appealing part of the trade since he is an entry-level player, not too heavy on the salary cap space and could develop into a top level player for sure. Nick Foligno is also a goal scorer and can perform
when needed while Ben Bishop has his ups and downs but is definitely capable in front of the net.
It will certainly be interesting to see where Rick Nash chooses to go as the July 1st deadline fast approaches.
