Ottawa Senators rookie Kyle Turris signs with Finnish Hockey League -NHL Update
Kyle Turris was overly quiet during the offseason and current lockout situation prevailing in the National Hockey League (NHL), but the Ottawa Senators youngster finally came out and decided to continue playing abroad by signing on with the Finnish Elite
League on Saturday, October 6, 2012.
The 23-year-old native of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, has reportedly chosen to sign on with Oulun Karpat of the Finnish league, according to the CalgarySun.com and had been in negotiations with a number of clubs throughout the deadlock between
the NHL and NHL Players’ Association.
“I’m excited to play,” said Turris, in a press release announcing his signing on the club’s website. “We’re glad that things (worked out) quickly.”
Turris was acquired by the Ottawa Senators during the offseason after he had a satisfactory run with his original draft team, the Phoenix Coyotes. He was drafted as the third overall during round-one of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and is yet to have a breakthrough
season in the NHL, now hopefully with the Ottawa Senators next time around.
The centre player’s first major season with the Phoenix Coyotes was back in 2008-2009 as he participated in 63 games overall and managed to pot 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists) and another 65-game season next time but a minor improvement with 25 points (11
goals, 14 assists). Phoenix literally gave up the next season as he only participated in six games and did not put up a single point to his name.
His first season with the Ottawa Senators had him playing better as he put up 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists) in 49 games played with a positive rating of 12 and 27 minutes in the penalty box.
It definitely seems like Kyle Turris is on the way to improving and just might get there next season if he plays a full 82-game hockey year with the Ottawa Senators, but looking at how the lockout is going at the moment, that just might be too difficult.
In total, Kyle Turris has 186 games to his name with 75 points (31 goals, 44 assists) and 70 minutes in penalty time.
