Ottawa Senators seeking revenge as they play against Montreal Canadiens – NHL Preview
Ottawa Senators got defeated by Montreal Canadiens in the last National Hockey League (NHL) game, but the latter is now seeking revenge as the two sides prepare to play their second straight game against each other.
In terms of rankings, the Canadiens are far behind the Senators, but the recent form of Senators has raised doubts on their ability to be consistent.
With just 11 games left for Senators to play in the regular season, it is crucial for them to find their form back and take the momentum into the playoffs.
The Canadiens, on the other hand, are not mathematically eliminated from the playoff contention, but their chances to play in the postseason are low. However, they will give their best shot to end the season on positive note.
The matchup between these two teams will take place on Friday, March 16, 2012, at Scotiabank Place, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Let’s have a look at both teams.
Senators
Senators have played six games this month and could only win two. At present, they are on a two-game losing streak with the defeats coming against Buffalo Sabres (4-3 after shootout) and Canadiens (3-2 after shootout).
Senators are ranked at seventh spot in the Eastern Conference with 82 points after 71 games.
By the looks of the things, Senators might qualify for the playoffs, but they have to be more determined and strong especially on defence if they want to progress.
Canadiens
They have played seven games this month and won four.
Canadiens are ranked at 14th spot in the Eastern Conference with 67 points after 71 games.
Throughout the season, Canadiens have remained on and off and that might hamper their progress in future as well. They have beaten quite strong teams, but have surrendered against lowly sides.
Previous meeting
In the last meeting between Senators and Canadiens, both teams went neck and neck and scored a goal each in the first period.
The second period went goalless and the final period saw both teams scoring one more goal each. The game was forced to overtime where no scoring move was made and shootout was called. Canadiens scored the only goal of the shootout and got the victory.
Senators’ coach, Paul MacLean, said after the game:
"We were happy to get a point on the road. It was a little close to the vest on their part and on ours, but this team doesn't bring the best out in us, for some reason.”
He added:
"We have another opportunity on Friday to find a solution. We don't seem to be able to skate like we do when we're successful. We have to find a solution to that."
Predictions
Canadiens can once again stun Senators.
The sum of goals scored by both teams might stay under six.
If Senators win, the winning margin will be less than two goals.
