Ottawa Senators showing potential with fourth straight over Washington Capitals 5-2 -NHL Update
Ottawa continued to rock the scene as the Senators grabbed their fourth straight victory, this time over the Washington Capitals in a dominating 5-2 performance on Wednesday night, February 22, 2012, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Senators newly found winning ways which luckily came at the right time has placed them comfortably in the seventh number spot in the Eastern Conference with 72 points. They are well ahead of eighth place Toronto Maple Leafs, which have 65, along with a struggling
Washington Capitals team at number 10 with 63.
Erik Karlsson grabbed the first goal of the night nearly midway through the opening period for his 13th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
Milan Michalek answered again for the Senators with his 26th after being a part of Karlsson’s, giving a dominating, 2-0, lead to Ottawa entering the second period.
The second period was a little more intense due to the visiting team heating up after they failed to score in the first 40 minutes of regulation. Milan Michalek added his second of the night and Chris Phillips sealed the period with four straight for Ottawa,
the two of the mid period both being on power play opportunities.
Firstly, Mike Green was booked for tripping 3:03 of the second, giving Michalek a reason to score while Troy Brouwer was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, allowing an ample opportunity to Phillips to grab his fourth of the year.
John Carlson finally put Washington on the scoreboard with his eighth on a power play chance while Mathieu Perreault fired off their second straight, now bringing Capitals within two of tying the score.
Nick Foligno gave the home crowd a chance to breathe easy with the insurance goal at 18:47, taking the well deserved two points.
Ottawa has been playing dazzlingly and do not plan on slowing down anytime soon. Their next test will be against the Stanley Cup defenders, Boston Bruins, at home on Saturday while Washington Capitals are set to host the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.
Both teams were in opposite positions this time last season, making the upcoming days quite exciting to wait for as they play towards playoff glory.
