Ottawa Senators sign their forward Kyle Turris for five years in an extension deal
Kyle Turris, a Canadian professional ice hockey player, has signed for Ottawa Senators of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). This is an extension deal of five years, for which Turris would be given $17.5 million.
The 23-year-old player would be given $3.5 million per year, which means he has got a huge increment. His last contract, which he had signed with Phoenix Coyotes on 22 November 2011, was for 2 years and $2.8 million, which was an average of $1.4 million.
$3.5 million in latest contract means his salaries have been increased 2.5 times.
Turris was very happy to sign the extension deal. According to him it was his always on the cards and Ottawa is the place where he wanted to be for a long time. He told that he also loves the city as he said,
"I'm really excited. I knew, from the end of the year, this is the place I wanted to be and I wanted to be here a long time. I love everything about it."
The Westminister, British Columbia native was in Phoenix Coyotes at the start of last season but on 17th December 2011, he was traded by Coyotes to Senators in exchange of Senators’ 2012 NHL Draft second round pick David Rundblad.
The 6-foot-1, 195 pounder thinks that it was a career changing moment when the trade took place and he was very happy about it. He thinks they gave me a lot more and he was feeling much more free at Ottawa. Turris also thanked Senators for showing
so much interest in him, giving him opportunities and showing trust in him as he said,
"(The trade) was huge. It was a really big breath of fresh air, a fresh start. I can't thank Ottawa enough for the opportunity and trust they had in me."
Bryan Murray, the general manager of Ottawa Senators also praised Turris as he said,
“He's a real complement to Jason Spezza in the No. 1 (centre) spot. He gave us a chance pretty much every night (last season) to have a real creative second line."
