Ottawa Senators stretch on-road winning streak to five games, beat San Jose Sharks, 4-1– NHL Update
Ottawa Senators did not face many troubles in stretching their on-road winning streak to five games as they comprehensively defeated San Jose Sharks, 4-1, in the National Hockey League (NHL) game on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the HP Pavilion.
After giving away a goal early in the first period, goalie, Craig Anderson, stood rock solid and did not allow the puck to enter his net. He made 36 saves in the game.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team members continued to accelerate and Colin Greening scored two goals after Kyle Turris provided equaliser and Erik Karlsson gave the lead.
Brad Winchester scored a goal for the Sharks, but the teams could not build on the momentum and collapsed against the aggressive outburst from the Senators.
Sharks’ captain was disappointment after the defeat and blamed the missed opportunities for the failure.
"We had some scoring chances early. If we convert a couple of those, things could have changed. They probably had six or seven chances and they made good on a lot of them."
At 3:10 in the first period, the Sharks registered their goal. Andrew Desjardins, who was standing near the left wall, got control of the puck and sent it into the centre where Winchester came skating through the rink and slashed it into the net.
The lead was neutralised at 10:09 in the same period.
A sharp passing move involving Sergei Gonchar, Daniel Alfredsson, set up Turris, who fired a shot towards the net, and the puck made its way through the Sharks’ players who were swarming around the net, and went in.
The senators got the lead in the second period. After collecting the puck in his own zone, Karlsson skated forward and gave a pass to Turris, who sent it back to Karlsson for a one-timer, taking the score to 2-1.
Greening scored his first goal of the game during a power-play. He hit a shot from inside the right circle and the puck entered the net to increase the goal difference to two.
Greening scored his second and the game’s final goal in the third period. He fired a straight shot at 9:34, and the puck easily got past the goalie.
“We're very confident right now," Greening said. "This shows that we're a very good road team. You've got to be able to get points on the road, especially when we're coming on the West Coast. We have a three-hour time change. This is really a tough place
to play. Coming in here and being able to win, especially 4-1, is obviously a testament to how resilient we are."
The Senators have won six of their last seven games and are hoping to capitalise on their winning run. They are now going to face Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, January 21.
On the other hand, the Sharks will face Vancouver on the same day.
