Ottawa Senators stun Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, win sixth straight -NHL Match Update
Ottawa continues to amaze the National Hockey League (NHL) as the Senators stunned the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, on Sunday night, October 30, 2011, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, for their sixth straight victory.
The Senators had only won one out of their first six contests of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season, but have remained perfect ever since, whether it be at home or on the road against some top-notch teams.
Taking advantage of the power play did not only work for the Senators on Sunday against Toronto, but has been allowing to take the lead in the past as well, which they intend on continuing to use.
"Special teams are going to be big for us all year", Jason Spezza said, who has 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in the past 12 contests. "When you're a young hockey club, if you can play 5-on-5 even up and win your specialty teams battles, you're going to
win most nights".
Clarke MacArthur inaugurated the scoring to put Toronto ahead a little over midway through the first during a power play as Ottawa’s, Erik Karlsson, was booked for slashing with a minor penalty.
Colin Greening fired back on an added man advantage of their own with Carl Gunnarsson on the benched for cross-checking for his fourth of the season with less than four minutes to go in the first period.
Chris Neil potted his third for the only goal of the second period on another penalty kill while Kaspars Daugavins extended the lead to, 3-1, for Ottawa and secured the match. Clarke MacArthur scored Toronto’s second and final goal with 11 minutes remaining
to go, but could not find a spot through Ottawa goalie, Robin Lehner, for the equaliser.
"It was a good job by their team", MacArthur said. "They battled hard all night and we might have played 25 minutes out there tonight so you can't expect to win games".
Ottawa Senators are eyeing their seventh straight victory when they meet the Boston Bruins on Tuesday while Toronto Maple Leafs have two more road games against New Jersey Devils on Wednesday and Columbus Blue Jackets the following day.
