Our founding fathers believed in the right to equal opportunity.  Free education and access to knowledge provide that opportunity to be productive and to succeed.

They weren't attempting to set up a state where all citizens expected and received an equal level of existence, no matter their personal contribution or achievement level.

No not at all.They didn't want the Federal government funding or regulating these things as Communists do.And they weren't until last century.
