Question:

Our baby is almost seven weeks old, is this normal?

Several things

1) She has begun to be quite a bit more fussy. Much harder to console

2) Increase in poops from 1-2 day to 4-5 day

3) Color change in p**p from bright yellow seedy to green/dark green gooey.

Her temperature is normal, she is still gaining weight well, and she sleeps through the night well. She has been cluster feeding somewhat this week too. Are these things normal? We already talked to our pediatrician and she didn't seem worried, but we still are. Any other people experience this?

  1. Baby might be having a growth spurt. They have one around 6 weeks so she could very well be having hers now and thy do feed alot more when they have them as well as being fussy. Is she breast feed? if so dont worry. Poos change colour quite a bit at that age. Green is still a healthy colour. My babys poos go green when ive eaten too much green vegys. Ive talked to the doctor and he said it is fine. If the poos smells very strongly and is waterey then bubs might have a bacterial infection. Also if baby is eating more (you mentioned she was cluster feeding more) then there will be more poo. My daughter goes threw times like this alot. she is having a growth spurt at the moment (11 weeks old) and is feeding and pooping more.

But dont be scared to get a second opinion if you feel the baby really isnt well. Better safe then sorry

    Good luck

  2. Sounds normal I know some breast fed babies can p**p at every feeding and the fussiness is coming cause she is coming into her own knowing that if she fusses she will get mom and dad attention.

  3. My son is almost 8 weeks old and:

    1. He has been a little more fussy, but not much.  Is your baby crying for hours and hours?  Could be colic or just gas.

    2. My son goes more frequently in one day, but he does not go every day.  He goes 3-4 times every other day.  His Doctor said this was normal.

3  When I started him on formula, he now has green poo, but it is not gooey.

All babies are different and your baby sounds totally normal.

    Congrats!

EDIT: Is she breast feeding long enough to get the hind milk?  Some times when breastfed babies have green poo, it is because they are not getting the hind milk only the beginning milk, which is more sugary.

  4. that sounds normal to me. she could be early teething.

  5. VERY normal.  Especially number 1.  Welcome to parenthood.  It's very confusing but if you aren't sure consult your doctor as much as you need to.  It's your right as first time parents.  I did and I don't feel the least bit bad about it.

  6. Try block feeding. It sounds like the cluster feeding might be causing her to get too much foremilk which is what causes the green p**p and can make her extra gassy.

Block feeding is where you feed off of one side for a set amount of time. So for say 2hrs you will feed only from the right breast and for the next 2hrs she will feed from the left breast. This will help her get more hind milk.

Give that a try for a couple days to see if there is any improvement.

  7. A lot of newborns get a little more clingy around 6 weeks. If she's consoable and doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, I'd keep an eye on it. If it gets worse or continues for a few days ( or other symptoms appear) call the doctor's office and speak to a triage nurse.

The p**p issues sound normal. Has she recently increased her intake? Maybe going from 3 ounces to 4?  As long as the consistency of the p**p isn't watery, I think things are ok. Most of the time, it's the consistency that's important.  The green p**p is normal but if it seems stingy, mucousy or black, call the doctor or go to your local ER.

Never hesistate to use the triage or on-call doctor line at night! Peace of mind is priceless

    Good luck and congrats!

  8. did you change her formula? the could be the reason for everything on your list.
