Our lab mix started itching really bad about a month ago. The vet suggested Claritin but that hasn't helped. I think he's allergic to ragweed. Does anyone have any experience with alternative treatments that might help?

  1. keep him away from ragweed? did you tell your vet its not working? try a diff. vet

  2.    I had a golden retriever with allergies. Or at least that's what the Vet called it.

But, my Vet said that human anti-histamines do not work on dogs. Dogs just don't have the bio-chemistry to allow the Benadry, Claritin or Zyrtec type drugs to work.

I had to put my dog on steroid pills during her allergy season. And it was during the fall. Not the ragweed season for me.

The steroids worked to calm the "hot spots" & let the skin heal. She was constantly scratching & biting the spots that "itched". Try to avoid getting the open skin sores infected.

    Good Luck
