Our female cat had a litter back in Dec. We kept 1 male kitten. Both are now desexed. They used to get along well but a couple of months ago, she became agressive towards him. She just has to see him to start growling & hissing. Has anyone else had this problem? Can you point us in the right direction or shed any light?

  1. Cat Moms naturally sense when it's time for a kitten to move on and start their own life.  Your female feels it's time for her son to be on his own.  Given time and patience, they will adjust.

    Good Luck!

  2. She is letting him know where he stands.  Cats establish an alpha in the group and that alpha must show dominance over the other(s). This is perfectly normal. Let them hash it out without interference or it will just drag on.

  3. All of my cats do that when we get a new one. I would say they will get used to each other but they might not. Dont try and seperate them it will only make it worse. The female will give up eventually. (maybe).

  4. Hi there we did exactly the same thing a few years ago and the same thing happened. It's very natural behaviour. With our cats they behaved in this way for probably at least a month or two (sorry it was quite a few years ago) and then became tolerant of one another again, they never got along as well as they had originally but that's because they no longer had a mother child relationship they were more cohabitants (theyd still curl up in front of the heater together though)

  5. She wants to kick him out of the nest, in preparation for mating again.  What she doesn't know is that she no longer will go into heat.  So I suspect in a short while, when she realizes she is not going to come into heat, she will accept the situation.  So just give both of them love and attention, and it will sort of settle down as if there were two cats who were strangers who now will become friends.

  6. I'd give them time, she probably does think it's time for him to move on but I think she'll get over it in time.

We brought in a stray girl who was already pregnant with her next litter, she was sweet and happy to come in but we had to catch her son who wanted nothing to do with us (he was around 6 months old).  She was mad when we caught him.  Lots of growling and hissing.  I felt bad for the poor little guy since she seemed to hate him when obviously she did a good job raising him.  She didn't react that way at all when we introduced her to my other cats.  For awhile after that she just ignored him then after a couple weeks she started to play with him a little.  I think she is pretty motivated to let him know she's in charge since their playing always involves her knocking him over but she doesn't hiss or growl any more.  And he was the only cat who was allowed around her when her new litter was small.  I can't really explain why he's laying on her, but they did learn to get along: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh149...

We kept one boy from that litter too (she's fixed now) so I am worried that they'll go through the same thing but confident that she'll get over it again.

Naturally the kittens would move on at some point to get their own territory.  After awhile she'll get comfortable and stop worrying about it since the food will keep coming and she won't end up with a new set of kittens to take care of.  I think if you're just patient it will all be fine.  good luck!
